A Warm Welcome: Our First Day at Institut Pertanian Bogor University

Our first day at IPB University (IPBU) in Bogor, Indonesia, was a day full of new experiences and unforgettable moments that marked the official start of our exchange program. We were welcomed with a simple yet meaningful ceremony, attended by both IPBU faculty and students.

The day began with a formal welcome, where both the faculty and students of IPBU greeted us with open arms. You could feel the excitement in the air as everyone was eager to get to know each other. After the speeches, we were treated to a lively cultural dance by IPBU students, offering a glimpse into Indonesia’s vibrant traditions. In return, we also performed a cultural presentation from Guimaras, showcasing a piece of our heritage. It was a truly special moment, where both sides shared their cultures and built a sense of mutual respect.

After the cultural exchange, it was time for the research presentations. First, our faculty members, Dr. Rhea Joy D. Flora, our campus dean, and Instr. Vivian A. Segobre, presented their research to the IPBU community. It was inspiring to hear about their work and the academic fields they are so passionate about. Following that, we students had the chance to share our own research projects. It was a great opportunity for us to present our work and get feedback from IPBU students. After the presentations, there was an open discussion, and the IPBU students asked us individual questions about our projects, which led to some really engaging and thought-provoking conversations.

In the afternoon, we were taken on a tour of the IPBU campus by some of the students. We were amazed by how large and well-equipped the campus is. Our first stop was the animal livestock area, where we saw a variety of animals being cared for as part of the university’s educational programs. The facilities were impressive, and it was clear that IPBU takes great care in ensuring the animals are healthy and well-cared for. Next, we visited the fisheries hatchery, which was an eye-opener. We learned about the different stages of fish farming—from breeding to growing—and how carefully the hatchery is designed to maintain the health of the fish and balance the aquatic ecosystem.

We also stopped by the campus gymnasium, a modern facility where students can engage in sports and physical activities. It was great to see how IPBU promotes a well-rounded education, encouraging students to stay active and healthy alongside their academic pursuits.

We were also able to visit the tissue culture laboratory, where we saw various plants being cultivated using in vitro culture techniques. In this sterile environment, plants like potatoes and other crops are grown and propagated. The lab was filled with rows of glass jars containing young plants, each carefully tended to. It was fascinating to see how tissue culture is used to clone plants and maintain crop quality, and it really showed IPBU’s commitment to advanced agricultural research.

The highlight of the afternoon was definitely the visit to the coffee teaching facility. This newly launched facility is a great example of how IPBU integrates practical learning with industry needs. We were shown the entire process of coffee production, from growing the beans to roasting them. The best part? We got to taste their high-quality coffee! It was the perfect way to end the tour, and we couldn’t help but appreciate Indonesia’s rich coffee.

By the end of the tour, our feet were sore from all the walking, but our hearts were full. We had seen so many incredible facilities, each designed to give students a hands-on education and valuable experience. The scale of the campus was impressive, and it was clear that IPBU is dedicated to providing students with the tools they need to succeed in their academic and professional careers.

It had been a long but fulfilling day, full of learning, cultural exchange, and memorable experiences. We couldn’t have asked for a better start to our time at IPBU. Looking forward to more adventures, new insights, and meaningful connections as we continue this exciting journey!
